Global Denim Awards

Amsterdam celebrates the first annual Global Denim Awards, an annual award in Kingpins

Last week in Amsterdam, the Dutch capital that hosted the second Kingpins, was also celebrated the first Global Denim Awards, to celebrate the diverse talent in the design and manufacturing area in denim.

Organizers of Kingpins, along with e3, HTNK and House of Denim organized the first show and competition at Denim City, Amsterdam’s brand new denim innovation campus – yes, the city, which has already become the capital of denim in Europe, has just inaugurated a ‘campus’ aimed only for research and innovation in denim.

The initiative presented six design projects by six international emerging designers each paired with an international denim manufacturer. The collections were presented to the international denim audience as well as a panel of judges that included the Godfather Adriano Goldschmied, Rene Strolenberg (co-founder of Tenue de Nimes), Norma Quinto (fashion journalist) and Jason Denham (founder of “Denham the Jeanmaker”). Winner of the contest were Bossa (Turkey) with Gizem Turan from Istanbul, for the Global Denim Award Fabric category and ITV Denim (Italy) with Jonathan Christopher from Rotterdam for the Design category.

Christopher says his collection was inspired by the urban nomad – everything to do with our “old Treasures” Trend, already checked? – and stated the Nomadum collection gives a look in the different worlds of nomads. For example, he used denim combined with alpaca wool to create a bomber jacket, a time consuming process that took six hours to be done. He also created a denim bomber jacket, one he liked so much that he ended up crafting a version for himself to wear during his collection presentation to the judges.Check!
